Village Trail Tunnel Upgrade - A Step in the Right Direction
Last week, an important improvement project was completed on the Village Trail pedestrian tunnel, enhancing both the functionality and charm of one of Waterville Valley’s most beloved local trails. This effort was the result of collaboration and cooperation between the Town of Waterville Valley’s Department of Public Works and Waterville Valley Resort. While the Dept. of Public Works provided the materials, Ian Cullison, Adventure & Nordic Center Director, and his team were able to bring in the equipment and manpower to repair erosion damage and resolve a long-standing ponding issue that left many feet soggy in recent seasons.
Thanks to the Resort’s investment in modern, specialized equipment, including a mini-excavator perfectly suited to the tunnel’s low, narrow profile, the crew was able to complete the work quickly and efficiently. The result is a smoother, more stable surface and better drainage, just in time for peak summer use!
But this upgrade is about more than just infrastructure. It’s about preserving a unique piece of Waterville Valley’s trail system.
The Village Trail is a quiet, shaded escape that feels tucked away from the hustle of town, yet it’s just steps from Town Square. This under-the-radar path offers an intimate, up-close experience of the valley’s natural beauty, weaving between tall trees, babbling brooks, and hidden corners of the community that many visitors may miss.
In the warmer months, it’s a favorite among dog walkers, casual strollers, and local bikers looking for a peaceful route that still connects directly to key parts of the valley. In winter, the trail becomes even more vital, serving as an important connector for cross-country skiers navigating the Nordic trail system. The pedestrian tunnel, in particular, ensures that guests can safely and smoothly travel beneath the main road without breaking their stride—whether they’re on skis, foot, or wheels.
Often overshadowed by bigger, steeper routes, Village Trail is a hidden gem: quiet, reliable, and full of charm. With these recent improvements, its legacy continues as a favorite all-season path for locals and visitors alike. This project is more than just a fix. It’s a great example of how collaboration and shared goals can enhance the entire community. Thanks to these improvements, users across all seasons will enjoy a safer, drier, and more accessible trail experience.
