It took a while, but spring has finally sprung here in Waterville Valley. The grass is starting to brighten and even a few early blooms are out. But don’t let the valley floor fool you, there are definitely still pockets of snow up high (see the photo of Livermore Pass from 5/19/19 below). So make sure to be prepared for the possibility of snow if you’re planning to hike Tecumseh or any other high peaks. Trails lower in the valley are starting to firm up but you will still find some mud and loose earth in the usual spots. This time of year can be hard on bicycles as the leaves and twigs on the trails from last fall can easily get sucked up into your derailleur (the thing that makes your bike shift gears). Best advice is stop pedaling as soon as you hear or feel something climb aboard and clean it out before it becomes woven into your bike chain or snaps your derailleur off. If your bike needs a little help getting back on the road/trail after a long winter then swing by the Adventure Center on Saturday and Mike will be happy to help get your ride humming.
Weekend Events & Activities
For Memorial Day Weekend we have our full rental fleet of hardtail, full-suspension, tandem, road, and fat bikes at your disposal. All our bikes are available for purchase at any time so if you’ve been looking for an excuse to upgrade your ride, now you have one. The Snows Mountain lift will be spinning for the first time this season at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Disc golf baskets are in the ground and ready to roll so buy yourself a new set because you deserve it! Or rent some discs to try it out for the first time.
There are events all weekend long for the whole family. We kick it off Saturday with the Mountain Cleanup at 9:30 a.m. followed by live music and a pig roast for all the hungry helpers. Sunday join us in Town Square at 12 p.m. for the 30th Annual Chowderfest; including live music and beer samples. Then on Monday we have our first Animal Encounter program with the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center at 10 a.m.
Just a reminder that the “Casting for Kirby” Youth Fishing Derby has been rescheduled from its usual date to June 15th to allow the work on the dam to wrap up and let the pond fill back up. For the time being due to that construction project the bridge across the dam is not accessible.
Enjoy a fantastic Memorial Day Weekend!
